- Egg-Laying Marks: Female Bactrocera cucurbitae flies pierce the skin of vegetables to lay their eggs. These marks are visible as small punctures or depressions on the vegetable surface.
- Premature Vegetable Drop: Infested vegetables often drop prematurely from the plant. This symptom is a common indicator of Bactrocera cucurbitae infestation and can lead to significant crop losses.
- Discoloration of Vegetables: The larvae feeding inside the vegetables cause discoloration, which is a sign of internal damage and decay.
- Maggot Presence: A clear sign of infestation is the presence of larvae or maggots inside the vegetables. Cutting open infested vegetables typically reveals these larvae feeding on the flesh.
- Decay and Rotting of Vegetables: Continued feeding by larvae creates conditions that promote decay, resulting in rotting vegetables.
- Oozing Fluids: In some cases, infested vegetables may ooze fluids or sap, indicating internal feeding damage.
- Hollowed Vegetables: The larvae consume the flesh inside the vegetables, leaving them hollow.
- Secondary Infections: The punctures made by egg-laying females and feeding larvae can allow entry for other pathogens, leading to secondary infections. These may manifest as additional discoloration, rot, or the presence of molds or other pests.
- Vegetable Deformity: Depending on the stage of development during infestation, larvae feeding may cause deformities in the shape and size of the vegetables.
- Reduced Crop Yield: A significant symptom of Bactrocera cucurbitae infestation is a reduction in crop yield, as many vegetables become infested and unmarketable.
